At four in the morning, we were sat on the floor making miniature props. We had not spoken to each other since midnight. I looked up and Maddy seemed hypnotised by a piece of foam, our eyes suddenly met and I saw that we had become living forms of hysterical sleep deprivation. It is moments like these that we will miss most about this project, and what we hope to achieve in our projects yet to come.

Working on the floor of a small two-bedroom flat was not the most glamorous way to start this project. But, with determination and an intense lack of sleep, Four Devils erupted from a mass of fabric swatches and aluminium wire.

Constructing Armatures was something we had never done before and was a step-by-step process of learning and creating our own individual style. From upholstering miniature armchairs to constructing a set from six blocks of plywood, this project has pushed boundaries we never knew we were able to reach, let alone cross.

The idea for Four Devils Sit Down to Tea sparked from a conversation regarding what we disliked most about our personalities and whether or not we accredited them as fixed or changeable. Four Devils explore this concept of personal demons through stop-motion animation, specifically noting at early animation and how it seemingly bridged the gap between modern art and film.

“Use animation as a magical operation. Animation isn’t about making inanimate objects move, it is about bringing them to life.” – Jan Švankmajer

FOUR DEVILS SIT DOWN TO TEA (2018)
Synopsis: What would happen if the worst parts of four people’s personalities could sit in a room together without inhibitions and without conscience? Four Devils is a journey from beginning to end, a 6-minute audio/visual embodiment of the everyday devil that sits on your shoulder.

Sound design is by the amazing Lars Koens. Can’t thank him enough for his contribution to this film.
